"Sala" ( Swahili word for prayer.)  Along with Rhino's, Elephants are subject to poaching and other issues leading them to be listed as vulnerable and endangered. This sweet matriarch looked to me like she was bowing her head in a moment of prayer, which is why I chose the Swahili word for prayer as her name.

Interesting Facts:

  • They are the only living member of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea, which once contained the now extinct Woolly Mammoth, and American Mastodon.
  • African elephants are considered vulnerable and Asian elephants are listed as endangered.
  • Elephants are the largest living land mammals on earth and have the largest brain!
  • Elephants have been found to express empathy and even help rescue other animals from predators.
